Prepress is the term used in the printing and publishing industries for the processes and procedures that occur after the creation of a design layout but before the final printing. The artwork is often provided by the customer as a print-ready PDF file created in desktop publishing.
Prepress is probably the most important step in getting a print job right. With the preflight software, the Prepress department checks all of the client’s electronic files and makes necessary adjustments like adding crop marks and converting the color modes to industry-specific CMYK. When done correctly, the possibility of a poorly executed job is virtually non-existent. If the project is to be produced on the digital press, the prepress process is then complete because the graphics files are electronically transferred directly to the digital press without the need for printing plates. However, if the project is to be produced on an offset press and sheet-fed, plates will be made to accommodate the project.

Due to the nature of our offset presses, we have certain design requirements. Below are some of the primary design requirements for a design file to be print-ready.
(These exclude basic principles such as adding bleed.) Learn more about that by clicking here.
300 DPI (dots per inch) is the recommended minimum resolution for print because it ensures sharp, high-quality images. Lower resolutions, like 72 DPI (used for screens), will result in blurry or pixelated prints.
If you are sending design-ready artwork, pdf files are preferred.
When designing and exporting designs for offset printing, it’s crucial to use the CMYK color model because offset printers rely on four ink colors—Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black)—to produce images. Unlike RGB, which is used for digital screens, CMYK ensures that colors appear as intended in print.
Using CMYK helps avoid unexpected color shifts, as colors in RGB may not translate accurately to print. Designing in CMYK allows for precise control over color reproduction, ensuring vibrant, consistent results that align with your vision. This is especially important for branding and professional-quality materials where color accuracy is critical.
Sheet-fed printing delivers precision, vibrant color reproduction, and exceptional versatility. Designed to handle thicker paper, it’s the perfect choice for high-quality materials that demand a polished and professional appearance. With the option of UV coating, your projects will stand out with a flawless finish.
From brochures, booklets, and magazines to custom calendars and maps, sheet-fed printing combines versatility and quality with precision and speed.
